POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Ridgewood YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. The age-group coach is responsible for on-deck instruction and coaching of swimmers. Responsibilities include assisting the Director of Competitive Swimming and other coaching staff with day-to-day operations. Every position at the Ridgewood YMCA upholds principles that are central to the mission of the YMCA Organization.

JOB FUNCTION:

  • Demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for competitive swimming and athlete
    development.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills and attention to detail in all coaching and
    administrative responsibilities.
  • Recognize the value of every swimmer and support the developmental needs of Age
    Group athletes.
  • Communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, and staff while maintaining strong
    administrative practices.
  • Develop, implement, and follow a comprehensive seasonal training plan.
  • Lead engaging, high-energy swim practices that promote skill development and team
    culture.
  • Assist with additional practice groups and support fellow coaches as needed.
  • Maintain flexibility to work evening practices and weekend events as required.
  • Attend and actively participate in scheduled staff meetings.
  • Attend and provide coaching support at all swim meets involving Age Group athletes.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of and commitment to a long-term athlete development model.
  • Current USA Swimming certifications or willingness to obtain required certifications
    within an approved timeframe.
  • Certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Professional Rescuer CPR/AED and First
    Aid.
  • Current American Red Cross certification.
  • Child abuse prevention training completed within 30 days of hire and maintained
    annually thereafter.
  • Background and experience in competitive swimming.
  • Proven ability to successfully coach novice and Age Group swimmers.
  • Prior experience working with children or in a related field preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with children of various ages and skill levels.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining a flexible work schedule.
  • Must consistently demonstrate a friendly, professional, and positive attitude.
